i forgot how to do it and can’t find my notes i took in class.
i remember you have to multiply something
example, jacket cost $120 and it is on sale for 40%
Since you are trying to find out what the final price is, simply subtract 40% from 100%, leaving you with 60%. Then, all you have to do is multiply 120 by 0.6, the decimal equivalent of 60%, and that should give you your answer, 72.
$120.00 x .40=
You have to multiply with 0.6 for 40%.
A 40% discount is 0.4, so what you have to pay is 0.6. So, if we multiply 120 * 0.6 we get 72. (Remember, 1 – 0.4 = 0.6)
However, 40% if it is 40% of the original price you multiply by 0.4. 120 * 0.4 = 48.
However, if the price goes up 40% you multiply with 1.4. So, if we multiply 120 * 1.4 we get 168.
I realize this is a rather crude explanation, but I hope it’s enough

120 x .4 = 48 120 – 48 = $72
