How to get good at standardized testing vocab?

how to
Paul asked:

Hi Guys,

Can you give me tips on how to get good at finding the definitions for random words? I’m taking a standardized test with multiple choice and I would like a few strategies for decoding the meanings of some words.

if u have an etymology course at school..take it! really helps. also…there was this book called Flocabulary. basically it has a CD and the book has lyrics. and these lyrics have vocabulary words. and the lyrics are written in a way that give u definition of those words. the CD has like 12 hip hop rap songs. and its directed toward SAT vocabulary…adn I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

do you mean actually learning what the definition is or remembering what it is for the test? because if you have the definition you could use flash cards and have your friends quiz you. I find that saying the definitions out loud help a lot. If you have the definition but don’t know what it means, try looking it up in a children’s dictionary. They have the same definition, just dumbed down a little into simpler and easier to remember phrases. The key is to make your own definition that you can remember the word by, or somehow connecting the word to another word that you know. Just today i had to remember what covalent bonding was and i associated ‘covalent’ with ‘common’ because covalent bonds are between common elements vs ionic bonding being between a metal and a nonmetal (and it word on my chemistry test!)
