How to get my dogs to stop barking?

how to
Brooke S asked:

I have two dogs that always bark when a car pulls into my driveway and when people knock on my door. One of these dogs also barks as loudly as possible when I let her out at night when she has to go to the bathroom.

How do I stop this?

Personally I think that it is appropriate for a dog to bark when someone pulls up to your house, and knocks on your door. Your dog is warning you that someone new is at the house. What if your dog didn’t bark and someone was trying to break into your house? Its their own way of warning you. However barking at night needs to be fixed. Try a squirt bottle, when they bark make a loud noise (clap your hands) and then squirt them. both the noise and getting squirted with water are adversive. When you squirt and clap you want to say something like “no bark” or “Quiet”. Just like you do with sit, stay, or “good potty”. You give a word to the action in which you want them to do.
