Your dog is warning you that someone new is at the house. What if your dog didn't bark and someone was trying to break into your house? Its their own way of warning you. However barking at night needs to be fixed. Try a squirt bottle, when they bark make a loud noise (clap your hands) and then squirt them. both the noise and getting squirted with water are adversive. When you squirt and clap you want to say something like "no bark" or "Quiet". Just like you do with sit, stay, or "good potty". You give a word to the action in which you want them to do.
