How to go about healing a cracked nipple?

how to
megalus03 asked:

Hey there,
I had been having problems breastfeeding and got some help and how it’s going great.
Except I have a huge crack in my right nipple. Feeding reopens the crack and makes it hurt, and pumping even more so.
so how should i go about getting this crack to heal? I always let air dry and put lanolin on the crack, but it’s not going anywhere!
Please help!

Express some breastmilk after nursing and rub that on your nipple. It’s okay to feed from your other breast a few times in a row and give your nipple a chance to heal. Good luck!

hand express a little bit of breast milk and apply to the cracked nipple after each feeding and let air dry. the reason whey i say after feedings is because your milk is richest then and it has more nutrients which will help you heal faster. also, until your cracked nipple heals start on the good breast first for every or most feedings because your baby’s suck is strongest at the beginning and then your hurt breast will get the weakest sucking so it won’t be injured so much again. i hope you get better so that you can enjoy breastfeeding full blown! :o )

i know how u feel btu ur doin good.. i would definately suggest nipple shields.. their a latex/silicone cover that goes over ur nipple so ur baby wont be sucking directly form teh nipple so it gives u time to heal. they wer a miracle for me! i would suggest the silicone ones, i bought both Avent n Chicco n prefered Chicco by far!

    congrats :)

Rub breast milk on it after a feeding and there are creams you can use.

Give it a chance to heal and express on that one and feed from the other–it really hurts, doesn’t it?

There is also some pretty great creams out there. At the first sign of an infection–run, don’t walk into a doctor’s office. It is extremely painful to have infected nipples, worse than child birth.
