From the 1973 original movie production, Yvonne Elliman sings ‘I Dont Know How To Love Him’ Note:This scene is shot in low light and candles. It’s supposed to be dark. ~Ric~
Lyrics:
…Close your eyes close your eyes
and forget all about us tonight.
MARY MAGDALENE:
I don’t know how to love him.
What to do, how to move him.
I’ve been changed, yes really changed.
In these past few days, when I’ve seen myself,
I seem like someone else.
I don’t know how to take this.
I don’t see why he moves me.
He’s a man. He’s just a man.
And I’ve had so many men before,
In very many ways,
He’s just one more.
Should I bring him down?
Should I scream and shout?
Should I speak of love,
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I’d come to this.
What’s it all about?
Don’t you think it’s rather funny,
I should be in this position.
I’m the one who’s always been
So calm, so cool, no lover’s fool,
Running every show.
He scares me so.
I never thought I’d come to this.
What’s it all about?
Yet, if he said he loved me,
I’d be lost. I’d be frightened.
I couldn’t cope, just couldn’t cope.
I’d turn my head. I’d back away.
I wouldn’t want to know.
He scares me so.
I want him so.
I love him so.

So beautiful — the song and the singer.
Sehr schönes Lied,
This is what this lyric says… any woman can sing it if they are in love.. is not a specif reference to her sexual experience.. is just a beautiful song of a strong love
I love this song because it makes me remember when I realized that I was in love.
When you fall in love you don’t know what to do with him… wanting to give him more than you could.. How should I make him love me ? The other ones treated me bad but this man is all love , then what can I do ? Maybe he is just too much for me ?? I am shocked..
who care what she is it’s a movie an a woderfull song
can noone think of jesus as a man and mary as a woman? we all need someone. who better to need than a being you have faith in. i am neither religousnor atheist, but i am spiritusl. my life is better for loving someone i’ve never met, but known my whole life
It’s true that Mary Magdalene is not necessarily a prostitute. People conflate her story with that of the prostitute that Jesus tells people not to stone, and it’s believed that her being thought a prostitute has more to do with the church’s trying to dissuade people from their devotion to her. However, none of that’s relevant here, since the play and film choose to make her a prostitute, however erroneous an assumption that may be. It’s clear from the song that she is one in this context.
Unfortunately, the song was written with the misconception that Mary Magadelene was a prostitute. This erroneous detail is replayed through many movies. The Bible does not say she was a prostitute, but only that she had seven demons driven from her by Jesus (Luke 8:2). She could have been a prostitute, but that is speculation.
Beautiful song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jesus Rocks!
The “dude” you’re talking about is Carl Anderson.
I disagree. Although I can see your point, the song obviously positions her as an experienced prostitute. Her lifestyle has rendered her unable to understand a love apart from sex. She doesn’t know how to act with someone who isn’t like other men, but the fact that he is not like other men seems to be part of the attraction.
Once again, another trip back to my innocent youth days. I have had a couple of the LP’s and the movie, both VHS and DVD. Beautiful rock opera. Peace ~ Majenta
no, it’s not a praise song but I imagine Mary Magdaline to be about the same age as Mary, a teenager, a very lost teenager who had a very timultuous life and suddenly her life changed in a way she never understood. She did not know the kind of love being offered to her so in a way this song is a love song to her Saviour. I think it is beautiful!!!!!
It does not look like a praise song for God to me. I don’t like the movies about Lord Jesus which are not based on the Gospel. Those moves are the fruit of some people fantasies and they dont always tell the truth. All we need to know about Lord Jesus is written in the Gospel.
This song moves me to tears every time I listen to it! Absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful voice!
Have to get the soundtrack to this movie. Watched the original version all the way through yesterday and really enjoyed it. Yvonne Elliman and the dude that played Judas were awesome.
I’ve had every single song/video from both versions posted for a long time.

the 2000 version sucks…
love this … should have posted try not to get worried or everythings alright … also such a good song..
I haven’t seen the 2000 version yet, but I don’t bother ’cause I am almost certain it ain’t NEARLY as good as the 1973 version! They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to!
I have. I prefer the 73 version.
i dont know how to love!?! anyway tremendous..
